Suspect in Wishram engages police in multi-hour stand-off

A domestic assault in Wishram Tuesday, Dec. 17, quickly escalated into a stand-off with police and a SWAT team before the suspect was finally arrested.

The Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) says it was dispatched to the 300 block of Main Street in Wishram at about 12:50 p.m., responding to a reported domestic violence situation. The initial report indicated the suspect was assaulting his father and was armed with a knife. As deputies responded, the suspect fled to a nearby residence. Once deputies arrived, the residence was contained, and attempts were made to get the suspect to voluntarily surrender. His refusal to do so led to a stand-off lasting several hours. Further investigation revealed the identity of the suspect, Ryan Newton, a 21-year-old Wishram resident.

KCSO made a mutual aid request to the Yakima Police Department for use of their SWAT team and hostage negotiation team. Once the Yakima police arrived, SWAT personnel were able to safely enter the residence and arrest Newton without major incident.

Newton was booked into the Klickitat County Jail on Domestic Violence charges related to residential burglary, theft third degree, harassment, assault fourth degree, and resisting arrest.
