Mitten Tree warms up Head Start

WARMING UP: Charles Daniels, left and Tyler Grimsley at Goldendale Head Start received winter hats and mittens Monday from this year's Goldendale Soroptimist Mitten Tree drive.

The Goldendale Soroptimist Club distributed mittens and winter hats to children at the Goldendale Head Start Monday after another Mitten Tree drive heartily supported by the community. The organization has done a Mitten Tree collection of the winter apparel every holiday season for 45 years, longer than the Goldendale branch's 42 years of existence.

The Mitten Tree was started by Goldendale school teachers Kay Kimmel, Dorothy Garner, and Arlene Dalton, when the three saw there was a need for warm hats and mittens for children. The Mitten Tree was originally placed in the front entrance of The Goldendale Sentinel and has continued to be there ever since. The word was put out that the tree...
