February is a good time to get heart smart and healthy

February is American Heart Month, so this month we dive into “Cardiovascular Disease,” the general term given to lots of different conditions that affect the health of your heart (“cardio”) and blood vessels (“vascular”).

The many types of heart and blood vessel diseases include hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure (also called hypertension), heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. Over 82 million Americans have one of these conditions, and each year more than 813,000 people die from them. That’s over 33 percent of all deaths in the U.S. each year.
