Fire burns Biggs Motel to the ground

RAGING FLAMES: Firefighters from four districts work to control the fire at the old Biggs Motel Monday. The structure burned entirely and collapsed in on itself.

The Biggs Motel, a landmark at the far west end of Biggs Junction, was totally destroyed in a spectacular Monday morning fire.

The flames spread rapidly though the structure which was literally only a mound of smoldering ashes and smoke within three hours of it bring reported.

All occupants got out of the building safely and no one was hurt, but all personal belongings of the occupants were a total loss.

The building was originally built in the 1930s and sat along Oregon Highway 30 at the old Maryhill/Grant Ferry Landing, about halfway between Rufus and Biggs. With the Dalles Dam nearing completion in 1954, the government purchased the motel and all land that would eventually be inundate...
