No, really, how are you?

To the Editor:

A few weeks ago, I visited a friend who was seriously ill. I was more surprised when he met me at the door. Then…out it came. “How are you?” I asked. For a moment he didn’t seem to know how to answer. So he didn’t.

We both laughed and I mentioned, “You know, we should come up with an expression of greeting that doesn’t demand we disclose our physical ailments at the moment. We don’t need to lie, but the truth might embarrass both of us.”

Another friend of mine avoids a definite statement of fine, good, excellent, or okay. He merely says, “Not bad.” He leaves you wondering if not bad means good or maybe in-between.
