Cougars and Goldendale JV get first wins of season in split

BIG HIT: C.J. Harvey looks to take advantage of a loose ball after hitting a triple. LWK third baseman Mitch Sanchey awaits a throw.

Goldendale's JV baseball team and the Lyle-Wishram-Klickitat Cougars toughed out a few innings of rain, wind and cold weather before splitting a double-header in Goldendale last week. Goldendale took the opening game 17-5 in a five-inning game and they lost the nightcap 10-6 in an agreed-upon five innings.

Goldendale used the first game to give Dean Enstad some pitching experience, expecting the senior to see some action on the mound for the varsity later on this year. Enstad had a good outing, giving up just two hits for the win. It was not the kind of game Coach Joe Bales was looking for from his Cougars who committed 11 errors.

Game two was much different with both teams putting together a good game. LWK eliminated errors completely in the second game, giving pitcher Dylan Sisson good support in the field. Goldendale also played well with just two errors.

The Cougars were off to a 7-0 lead after their half of the third inning. Two of those runs were scored by players who reached base on the only two errors of the game and three others were by players who were walked. Travis Armour scored after walking in the first inning and again after a walk in the third. Mitchell Sanchey drove in both runs in the second inning with a single.

Goldendale threatened in the first two innings, leaving the bases loaded in the first and failing to capitalize on a double by Zach Berkshire in the second inning. Will Bostick led off the third inning with a single followed by two stolen bases. He scored on a single by Daniel Bischoff with Ty Read gunned down trying to go from first to third. Bischoff then scored on a triple ripped to deep left field by C.J. Harvey. Harvey came home on a single by Colby Valladares for the third run of the inning and the makings of a come-back.

Bischoff set the Cougars down in order in the fourth and Goldendale made it a 7-5 game with two runs in the fourth thanks to a two run triple Read who tried to score on the play but was thrown out by Armour on the relay.

The Cougars took advantage of a pair of walks, a single and a double by Phoenix Dorsey to put three runs on the board in the fifth. Sisson struck out two batters in the bottom of the fourth to kill any more hopes of a Timberwolf comeback.
