Impact of Washington State's loss of school waiver rolls downhill to local school district


Goldendale School District became a victim of guilt by association last week when U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan informed the state that Washington’s waiver for Title I funding was being lifted due to non-compliance with federal requirements, specifically related to tying students’ test scores to teacher evaluations.

Even though Goldendale meets the requirements, the state does not, thanks to a decision by the Legislature to use the word “may” instead of “must” when it came to outlining how teachers are to be evaluated.
