Taking a stand

Letter from the community

To the Editor:

I would like to respond to The Sentinel’s April 16 article entitled “Gorge Commission meets in Goldendale.”

First I want to commend our Klickitat County Commissioners for protecting us who have property in the Scenic Gorge area. County Commissioner David Sauter has taken the lead in negotiating with the Gorge Commissioner’s request that Klickitat join the Gorge Commission “carte blanche” by deftly offering an alternative solution.

The genius of Mr. Sauter’s position is that we will have our own county planner help landowners through the process of obtaining building permits in the Scenic Area. In return the Gorge Commission enjoys a correctly presented application at Klickitat County’s expense.

However, the caveat is this: the Gorge Commission remains liable for legal challenges to land use permits issued. It is a win-win solution for Klickitat County. It creates co-operation between Klickitat County and the Gorge Commission, but also provides Klickitat County a buffer zone from legal challenges initiated by self-serving political action groups bent on controlling land uses within the Scenic Area.

Commissioner Sauter deserves a round of applause for taking a stand to help landowners caught in the mire of overly aggressive and complicated zoning requirements.
