Blast from the past


Harvey Aluminum, south of Goldendale, in 1971. More than 40 years ago, the Harvey Aluminum smelter was built alongside the John Day Dam. At the height of production, the smelter was the largest employer in the county, employing more than 700 people. Today, the facility is all but extinct, leaving only a few large buildings and an office complex.
