Pirate boys, edge Cougars at regionals

TOP QUALIFIERS: Glenwood's Bethany Putnam, left, and Bickleton's Lindsay Brown qualified in all four events they competed in at Districts in Toppenish. Above, Brown took control of the 300 hurdles as the girls made their way into the final 100 meters of the 300 meters hurdles. Brown won both hurdle events plus the high jump and was second in the 100 meters. Putnam won the pole vault and long jump and was second in triple jump and 300 hurdles.

Bickleton defeated Lyle-Wishram for the boys' team score at the combined District 5/6, regional track meet in Toppenish, Friday. The girls title went to Pateros with Bickleton finishing third. Five Pirates and eight Cougars were among 21 athletes from Greater Columbia Gorge League schools who qualified for the State meet, this weekend.

Chance Carpenter, of Lyle-Wishram and Lindsay Brown, of Bickleton were the only sprinters to keep District 6 from capturing all 12 sprint berths for the State meet. Carpenter finished second by the narrowest of margins with officials reviewing the video of the finish for several minutes before deciding that Carpenter's lean beat Nazar Turchik, of Soap Lake...
