THE VETERANS AND THE CONGRESSWOMAN: U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler speaks to veterans from the Goldendale American Legion Saturday evening at Maryhill Winery.

U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler told Goldendalians Saturday evening their effort to raise funds for special Track Chairs for disabled veterans was inspiring.

"There are other communities I have been in that are larger and definitely have more wealth and economic throughput that would not be able to do what you all have done in four months to raise this money," she said at the gathering at Maryhill Winery. "I'm honored to be here, and I just want to say thank you, especially with the problems we're having federally with the VA."

Herrera Beutler added she wanted to know of veterans in need. "If you know a veteran who has not been able to receive services or if you are that veteran," she said, "part of my job is to make sure people have access to what they have earned. It's a shame that we have to get involved to help people get their benefits, but we're proud to get to do it. And what you all are doing here in the community makes me think that the federal government has no excuse, because if you all can meet the needs and step up, it just challenges me all the more. Congratulations."
