Tallman's class project can split logs

Andrew Christiansen

Heavy Duty Ax:  Using a boat trailer hitch, an axle and wheels, Tanner Tallman built a hydraulic log splitter as part of his Ag Mechanics class.

Tanner Tallman completed his wood splitter in his ag mechanics class at Goldendale High School.

The senior said he decided on the project to help his grandfather who has been splitting wood by hand for years. The splitter was made from scratch using a boat trailer hitch, an axle and wheels. The steel reach from a logging truck trailer was cut and converted into a hydraulic fluid reservoir. The motor came from a water pump.

Tallman estimates he purchased about $550 worth of fittings, valves, hoses and hydraulic ram.

The project was started in November and was finished last month. He will exhibit the splitter at the Klickitat County Fair.
