William "Toehead" Olson

William J. Olson (Toehead) was born on the Centerville Swale March 21, 1921, to Oscar Frank and Sophia Anderson Olson. He passed away June 8, 2014 at the family home, at the age of 93.

Sophia died when Toehead was 10 days old, and he lived in Kelso for two years with his Uncle Bill Witikka. Oscar then married Mariam Simi and Toehead was brought back to the family home in Centerville. He grew up with his five siblings; Howard Olson, Margaret Olson McConnell, Joe Olson, Betty Olson Dalsanders and Elaine Olson Knox; all preceded him in death.

He attended all 12 years of schooling at Centerville; graduating in 1939, salutatorian of his graduating class – his future wife, Joyce, was valedictorian. Toehead married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Bolton, on Aug. 24, 1941. They were married under the willow tree in her family's front yard at 8 a.m .; the tree is still standing in their yard. They spent time in The Dalles and Kelso, before settling back in Centerville. He farmed, raised cattle and worked on various construction jobs, including the John Day Dam, The Dalles Dam, and many homes in the Centerville/Goldendale area. He also served as a Marine during World War II.

He lived as an example to his family and friends, showing that honesty and a hand shake was as good as a signature on a line, and responsibility for your own actions were priority. Each of his children learned these lessons with him standing behind us, making sure we followed through.

Toehead is survived by his wife of 72 years, Joyce; his four children, Jay and Judy Olson, Lee and Saundra Olson, Craig and Cindy Olson, and Liisa and Larry Pangle; nine grandchildren, Ty Olson, Crystal (Sam) Counts, Chip Olson, Kristen Matheny, Eric Olson, Lexi Pangle, Matt Olson, Wade Olson and Lanna Pangle; along with 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He also counted Darby Hanson as grandchildren, along with the Dale Thiele Family, Mike, Sis and Toni and many other special families.

Services will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 11 a.m., at Grace Brethren Church, in Goldendale, Washington.

The family would especially like to thank the wonderful Home Health/Hospice caretakers that took Dad under their wings and loved him as family. In memory of Toehead, please support yourlocal Hospice organization.
