State bills KPUD for starting MM 28 Fire

WHAT STARTED THE FIRE?: Smoke rising from last July's Mile Marker 28 Fire. The state Attorney General's Office says the fire was the KPUD's fault. KPUD says it was not.

The Klickitat PUD has been billed more than $2 million by the Washington State Attorney General's Office (AGO) on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The charge results from the AGO making a determination that the KPUD was negligently responsible for starting last year's Mile Marker 28 Fire.

The utility released a statement Monday asserting it considers the AGO's finding erroneous. "KPUD does not believe it was in any way negligent," the statement reads, adding that it sees an entirely different cause behind the start of the fire and implying that DNR did not consider the facts in full detail.
