Wahkiacus fire still burning, DNR brings in team to Glenwood

A fire remains burning near Wahkiacus, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has mobilized a team near Glenwood.

The fire has burned close to 40 acres, according to reports yesterday.

Matt Eberlein, Southeast Region Fire Operations District Manager for the DNR, told The Sentinel yesterday that the fire was started by a lightning strike. Presently the fire is being contained by a dozer line. “Firefighters are trying to improve the lines today,” Eberlein said. “The danger isn’t over on this one due to gusty winds. We’ll stage a Type 3 team in Glenwood today.”

Eberlein also said a fire burned approximately 20 acres at Doug’s Beach on HWY 14. “We’ve made good headway at Doug’s Beach,” he said. “The fire should be contained by end of shift today.”

Eberlein had advice for this fire season: “Be careful with your outdoor activities and check with county regulations,” he said. “Make sure to observe the burn ban.”
