Portland officer involved in assault at Trout Lake RV park

On July 28, at approximately 9:34 a.m. the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an assault that had taken place at around 11:30 p.m. on July 27 at the Elk Meadows RV Park at Trout Lake. The initial report indicated that a 17 year old male had been assaulted by an adult male and that the reporting party believed that the adult was a police officer.

KCSO responded to the RV Park and made contact with all the involved parties. The investigation revealed that 43 year old Jason Pearce, who is employed with the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) as a sergeant, allegedly became involved in a physical altercation with a 17 year old male from Battle Ground. The altercation allegedly stemmed from inappropriate comments made by the juvenile toward Sgt. Pearce’s juvenile daughter. When Sgt. Pearce told the juveniles to return to their campsite the 17 year old became confrontational with Sgt. Pearce. During the physical altercation, the juvenile sustained injuries to his face and neck area. Sgt. Pearce maintains that he was acting in self-defense.

A second PPB officer was present during the altercation, but was not directly involved in the incident.

The investigation revealed that alcohol was involved. The case will be forwarded to the Klickitat County Prosecutor’s Office with the recommendation that Sgt. Pearce be charged with assault second degree, which is a felony.
