Gerald "Jerry" Sletten, 93 of Bristol, S.D., died on Monday, August 18, 2014 at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol, Rev. Janet Miller will officiate.  Burial with military rites will be in Bristol Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster on Friday, Aug. 22, from 5 p.m. to -7 p.m., and prior to services on Saturday.

Gerald "Jerry" Marshall Sletten was born on Friday, May 6, 1921 to Walter and Ethel (Marshall) Sletten at Waubay, South Dakota.  At an early age, he and his parents moved to Tacoma, Washington, and later to Toppenish, Washington.  Jerry attended school in Toppenish until the seventh grade.  The family then moved to Lewistown, Mont., where he graduated from Fergus High School.  While there he worked for Safeway, Hanover Mines and also his father. 

World War II broke out so Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Lewistown, Montana and was inducted at Helena, Montana.  Jerry was then sent to Norfolk, Virginia for boot camp.  He served on Adak in the Aleutian Islands and also on Kodiak Island, Alaska.  From there he went to the South Pacific, going to Hawaii, Guam and Tenian.  Approximately five days after the Armistice was signed he went to Japan.  He spent four years in the service.

Upon returning home from the service, he went into business with his parents, putting in various clothing stores in Niles, Gustin, Newark and Gilroy, California.  It was in Gilroy that he met the love of his life.

On October 16, 1950 he married Mary Gaspar at Carson City, Nevada.  They owned and operated stores in California and Washington after his father's retirement.  They settled in Goldendale, Washington in 1959 and retired in the 1980's dividing their time between Bristol and Goldendale.  In 1989 they sold their stores.  In 1991 the couple moved to Bristol, South Dakota.  Mary passed away in July 2006.  Jerry entered Sun Dial Manor in Bristol in November 2013.

He was active in community service clubs.  In Pleasanton, California and also in Goldendale, Washington he served as President of the Lion's Club and Chamber of Commerce.  Jerry was also a member of the Rotary Club in both Niles and Gustine, California.  In Freemont, California he was the founder of The Commercial Bank of Freemont.  He was also a Life Member of the American Legion in Goldendale and the V.F.W. in Webster, South Dakota. He also belonged to the Alameda Sherriff's Posse.

Jerry passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014 at Bristol, South Dakota at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 12 days.

Survivors include cousins; Marcella Johnson of Sun City West, AZ, Walter (LaVonne) Sletten of Montevideo, MN, George (Ann) Parker of Superior, WI, Mary (Bob) Raap of Bristol, SD, Conrad "Joe" (Lee) Mogen of Moose Lake, MN, Susan Parker of Fargo, ND and Barbara Reid of California; and a host of other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
