As work on the intersection of SR14 and Highway 97 nears completion, it is clear that a small change is making a big difference. A new right turn lane for traffic westbound on SR14 allows them to declare their intent to turn onto Highway 97 earlier than before. Drivers who intended to turn east on SR14 often had short notice of traffic turning off SR14 while having to be alert to 60-mph traffic coming over the hill, eastbound on SR14. That and the assumption that most westbound traffic would make the turn toward Goldendale led to plenty of wrecks and near wrecks in the past.
