Timberwolves and Pirates test early season form at Apple Ridge

KEEPING PACE: Goldendale's David Gunkel, center and Mykhail Lembke, right ran together at the start of the first 3-mile race at Apple Ridge, Saturday. Lembke finished the race in 23rd place at 19 minutes, 19.4 seconds with Gunkel 29th at 19:28.9. Eleven Timberwolves and four Bickleton Pirates competed in the three varsity races.

Runners from 25 high schools and nine middle schools invaded the orchards of Cowiche for the Apple Ridge Run on a sunny Saturday with fall colors just beginning to emerge. Among the throng were 11 runners from Goldendale High School, four from Bickleton and one middle school runner from Goldendale. With a variety of ways to run the hilly course, varsity runners entered one of three, three-mile races.

Goldendale boys were led by Dillon Rising with a 17:58.3 in the second varsity group, good enough for 18th place. Also in that group were teammates Ricky Shurtleff, 23:58.3, and Adeline Henry, 27:38.4.

All four Bickleton boys also entered race two as Coach Chase Rost picked the course he expects the boys to run at Districts. Troy Roberts and Andrew Gannon had a strong showing for the school with Roberts crossing the finish line in seventh place with a time of 16:53.7 and Gannon placing ninth in 17:02.2. The other Bickleton runners were Joe Cardenas, 20:00.5 and Joseph Cummings, 22:08.9.

Goldendale had a close group of runners in the first and flattest of the courses with Mykhail Lembke pulling ahead of David Gunkel in the final mile to finish 23rd in 19:19.4 to Gunkel's 19:28.9. Drew Bowdish wasn't far behind at 20:08.1.

Nadia Smith had the fast time for Goldendale's girls with a 22:43.3 in race one followed by Emily Hurst who had a time of 27:26.2.

Running in race three were Timberwolves Michael Jagelski, 18:57.7 for 13th place and Will Bostick in 23:22.6. Valentina Weiland crossed the finish line in 31:29.1.

The sole middle school runner for Goldendale was Jade Smith with a time of 11:30.7 in the 1.5 mile course.
