Timberwolves wear out another opponent in 20-8 win over Cougars

POWERHOUSE: B.J. Walter drags White Swan players on his way to a 47 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter of Goldendale's 20-8 win.

A pattern has emerged for the Goldendale Timberwolves' football team. By the third quarter of each of their games this year, the offensive line has taken control of the line of scrimmage and the opponent begins to wear down. Last week's victim was White Swan. After a scoreless opening quarter, the Wolves scored on a Chris Trunkey run to lead 6-0 at the half. The rest of the game was all Goldendale with the Cougars scoring late in the game when the issue was settled.

B.J. Walter plowed for 91 yards on 11 carries, including a 47 yard run with White Swan left on the ground in his wake. It was the second touchdown of the game for Walter who is averaging 5.2 yards per carry this year. Tyrell Read gained 30 yards on eight carries, giving the Wolves a good mixture of a power and sprint rushing attack.

The second half domination by Goldendale's line isn't by accident, according to Coach Chris Hill. "We take pride in our conditioning," says Hill. And it is not just on the offensive side of the game. "We put a ton of pressure on White Swan's quarterback," says Hill. Three games into the season, the team has settled into the new system smoothly, according to Hill. They have made some adaptations to the way they run certain plays and have put people in positions where they can excel. Hill won't point to any area that needs improvement, saying they focus more on what they do well. He concedes that nothing is perfect and they are working to improve in all areas of the game.

Next week was scheduled to be an away game at Highland. The Scots have cancelled their varsity football season due to low numbers. Hill was able to find a replacement opponent, Vashon Island. The Pirates are 0-1 in Nisqually League play and 0-3 on the year. The game will be played on Saturday at 1 p.m.
