Sally Martell


Elva Leota Martell, fondly known as Sally, passed away in The Dalles, Oregon on October 5, 2014 at the age of 97.

She was born in Osceola, South Dakota on September 19, 1917 to Bernice (Derry) and Glen Derscheid. Sally grew up in South Dakota then moved to St. Maries, Idaho. On June 25, 1938 she became the bride of Ernest Rufus Martell in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Ernest moved to Klickitat to work at the mill and when he saved enough money he sent for Sally. She worked in the box factory at J. Neils during the war. Mrs. Martell also worked at Huntington’s, helped her husband with a gas station they owned and worked at the Klickitat Hotel. Sally enjoyed working in her yard and being as productive as she could be. She was always there to lend a hand and help anybody.

Mrs. Martell is survived by her sons William “Bill” Martell of Klickitat and Terry Martell of Myrtle Point, Oregon; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest, who passed away in 1986, brother Nelvin Derscheid, and sisters Joyce Apperson and Mildred Monroe.

A graveside service was held at Mountain View Cemetery in Goldendale, Washington on October 12. Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
