RISING TO THE OCCASION: Kevin Gilk goes up for a jump shot against Ki-Be.

The La Salle Lightning crushed Goldendale in the league opener at La Salle 75-38 on Saturday night. Four Lightning scored in double figures as La Salle hit for a blistering 52.5 percent on two-point shots and were 6-15 on threes. It was the second night in a row that Goldendale was cold from the floor and another game where they were beaten on the boards. The night before, Ki-Be inched away from Goldendale quarter by quarter for a 51-34 win.

Dillon Shattuck led Goldendale both nights with 15 against La Salle and 13 against Ki-Be. Shattuck also led the team in rebounds both nights with 12 against Ki-Be and just six against La Salle. The Wolves also lost the turnover battle both nights as their opponents kept their turnovers to just 10 in each game.

The Lady Timberwolves ran into a wall after playing a good game at Kittitas and crushing Wahluke. Friday night the girls could only hit 4-22 from the floor, scoring just eight points in the first half against Ki-Be while turning the ball over 37 times for the game. The Bears exploded for 23 points in the third quarter, as they too were sluggish in the first half. The final score was Ki-Be 43, Goldendale 29. Kirsten Twohy continued along her double-double path with 13 points and 15 rebounds, but the extra opportunities for buckets allowed Ki-Be to win the game.

Things weren't any better the next night in the league opener at La Salle. After a low scoring first half, Julia Boutillier and Lauren Newman took over the game and the Lightning pulled away to a 44-26 win. Twohy had nine points and Kartes scored eight for the Wolves.
