Local aviator surmises fate of Flight 8501


Goldendale resident Doug Herlihy is an aviator and highly regarded aviation expert. He is called upon to testify in aircraft accident court cases around the world.

On Sept. 17, 1908, a young air pioneer, 1st Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge, US Army, died in the crash of a “Wright Flyer” at Ft. Myer, Va. Snapping a propeller off when hitting a wing-rigging wire during a steep turn, the fabric and wood craft plunged steeply to the ground in front of a crowd of officials gathered to watch this historic flight.
