Phony PUD dunning strikes businesses

FAILED CON: Goldendale's Simcoe Cafe was a target of a failed scam scheme recently.

What has been an occasional problem over the past few years has risen from its slumber: local counties are being scammed by their supposed public utilities departments. Several people, business owners, and home-owners alike, have received phone calls at odd hours with threats-"Pay now or lose your power."

"I was called around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, and there was someone on the other end saying that I hadn't paid my power bill and that they were going to shut it off," says Sue Dolsen, owner of the Simcoe Café on Main Street. "They asked if they could speak to the man who pays the bills and I said, 'No, but I will take a number.' So they gave me a number and I called back immedi...
