Cano and Ricks start tennis season with pair of two set wins

 


Goldendale boys split their double-dual tennis matches on Saturday against Wahluke and Royal as the Lady Timberwolves dropped a pair of 4-1 matches.

Ignacio Cano and Spencer Ricks got the season off to a near perfect beginning, winning both matches in straight sets. They defeated Wahluke’s Lino Sanchez and Miguel Uritia 6-2, 6-2, then swept Royal’s Chase Christensen and Anthony Hebdon 6-2, 6-3. The boys’ other two wins came from Jairus Christensen in singles 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 over Johnny Mullen, of Wahluke and via forfeit by Tim Hanna and Brian Ward against Royal. Hanna and Ward lost to Wahluke’s Elliot Ahmann and Michael Coulson 6-3, 6-3. The final team scores were 2-2 in both matches with just two pairs in doubles for both teams.

The girls’ two wins came from their singles matches. Hanna Hoffman defeated Mariela Pineda, of Wahluke 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 and Kuljira Kanchana defeated Royal’s Vanely Ruiz 6-4, 6-3. Hoffman lost her match against Andrea Farias, of Royal 6-1, 6-1 and Kanchana lost to Wahluke’s Mariudea Neenez 5-7, 7-6, 10-7.

The girls played all three doubles matches against both teams. Kylee Beam and Halie Allen fell to Marisabel Tivado 6-2, 6-3 and to Grizel Jiminez and Kassandra Salas 7-5, 6-3. Faith Stelter and Sandra Ward lost 6-3, 6-0 to Dianne Cruz and Sandra Cruz and 6-4, 6-0 to Julissa Coyazo and Gicell Palacios.

Goldendale’s Alyssa Simmons and Faith Simmons lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Elizabeth Bravo and Janeth Ramirez. Alyssa then teamed with Ashley Isaacson in a 6-4 Daniela Castro and Ramirez.

Earlier in the week, Goldendale girls defeated Stevenson 4-1. Hoffman and Kanchana took care of business in singles matches with Hoffman beating Kerri Coutour 6-1, 6-2 and Kanchana shutting out Yarlin Magana 6-0, 6-0. Doubles wins by Stelter and Ward 7-5, 6-4 and Alyssa and Faith Simmons 6-0, 6-1 accounted for the four wins. Stevenson’s pair or Brianna Campbell and Nettie Escene defeated Beam and Allen 6-0, 6-0.

The Timberwolves have a busy week. They hosted La Salle in their first home match on Tuesday. They are on the road at White Swan on Thursday and they travel to Granger for matches starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
