IRS phone scam still hitting dozens in county

(301) 861-0901.

And if you get a call from the IRS demanding that you call this number back to discuss your wayward tax payments-or face dire consequences-remember the following:

• This number is out of Waldorf, Md. Remember Waldorf? It's where the IRS is not headquartered.

• The number is managed by MCI Worldcom Communications. And it's currently on switch number RSTNVABHDS3 (a technical specification for phone hobbyists). Key word there is "hobbyists." Then remember that, while individual IRS workers may indeed enjoy such hobbies as alchemy or comic book collecting, as a whole the organization is not renowned for its playful pastimes.
