Local couple working in Kenyan hospital safe distance from Al Shabaab university attack



Safe and secure: Goldendale citizens, Jim Monroe and Sue Owen, reassure family and friends they are safe, following an attack on a university campus only 200 km away from Maua Methodist Hospital.

Goldendale citizens Jim Monroe and Sue Owen are chief administrators of the Maua Methodist Hospital in Maua, Kenya. They sent this update Thursday on security conditions in the country in the wake of the killing of 156 people in a terrorist attack at a university in Garissa.

"Sue and I woke up this Thursday morning to the devastating news out of Garissa and the Al Shabaab attack against the university campus in Garissa proper. As of this writing, the attack surpasses that of Westgate in terms of numbers killed and wounded.

"We have already received several inquiries about both our own well-being and security for teams coming this summer to MMH.

"Garissa is about 200 km as the crow flies...
