April is sexual assault awareness month, and it is time for us to reflect on how sexual assault affects every person in our community and to take action to stop sexual violence.

National research shows that one out of every six women has been the victim of sexual violence in her lifetime. In Washington State more than a third of all women have been sexually assaulted in her lifetime. On average one out of five girls and boys are sexually assaulted before they turn 18. About 10 percent of sexual assault victims are men. Nearly 68 percent of sexual assaults are never reported to police, and 98 percent of perpetrators will never be held accountable for their crimes.
