Road closure controversy heats up

Mix-up over the question: is it or isn't a public through road?

NOWHERE ROAD: England Drive, shown here in yellow, has been gated off by residents along the road who claim it is private. Others insist it's a public through street and cannot be blocked. One county public works engineer couldn't make the call; Director Gordon Kelsey says it's a private road.

In a recent story in The Sentinel, it was reported that a Goldendale resident had made plans to gate off a private road on which approximately 15 residents live. This resident, William Potter, acting in response to his neighborhood's struggles, set out to prevent a reoccurrence of thefts and other crimes by closing off the road with a gate-like structure. Although this seemed like a reasonable solution to their problem, there have been several complaints made towards the matter.

The most common complaint made against this action is that the road is not considered private and is actually a public through road. The road, England Drive between Indian Basin/Old Stage Road and Trowbridge Road,...
