Lady Cougars earn split with Knights, two wins away from State

Lyle-Wishram battled their way to a split at Dallesport against Sunnyside Christian in a crazy pair of games that saw 64 runs scored off 64 hits. The Cougars lost the opener 22-10 and won the final game of the regular season 17-15.

It was a double-header for those who love offense as only eight batters struck out for the two games and there were enough big innings to keep the outcome of the games in doubt. Lyle-Wishram fell behind by nine runs in the first inning of game one, but an 8-run fourth inning gave a moment of hope with the score 16-10. The Knights weren’t about to let one get away, however and pushed the lead back to 12 runs and the Cougars ran out of gas in the fifth for the loss. MaeLynn Luke pounded out three doubles in the game with Amber Tompkins tripling for the Cougars. The Knights had 17 hits to Lyle-Wishram’s 15.

The teams had the same number of hits in game two, but this time the Cougars jumped on top with a big first inning. Lyle-Wishram scored in each of the first four innings and led 17-7 in the top of the fifth inning. Sunnyside Christian had their big rally in the fifth to make the score 17-13. They scored twice more and had runners in scoring position with one out in the seventh. Pitcher Winter Bergin got her fourth strike out of the game for the second out. The next batter made a bid to tie the game with a drive into the left-center field gap, but Larissa McConville made a great play coming from left field to snare the ball for the final out. Jones went 3-3 in the game with a pair of RBI and she and Luke each tripled. Morgan Machado was 3-4 in the game and with Luke and Jones, all three had five hits for the double-header and every player for Lyle-Wishram had at least one hit on the day.

The Cougars played a fill-in game against Mabton this week and will play at Sunnyside against the Knights, May 16 at 1 p.m. The winner advances to a District game against Pateros. That game will be played at Kittitas on May 23 with the winner advancing to State.
