Key battles emerge at State qualifier for 1B track and field

There are a number of great match-ups at the combined District 5/6 meet, this Friday. Twenty of the Klickitat County 1B students are on the state top 10 performance list for this year. Gabe Montoya, of Lyle-Wishram is number one in all three throwing events. Bickleton’s Nathan Powers and Lindsay Brown are number one for 110/100 meter hurdles and high jump, respectively

Powers is going up against Riverside Christian’s Micah Tranch in the high jump. Both were second at State last year, Tranch at 6-2 in 2B and Powers at 5-10 in 1B. Powers was runner-up to Manson’s Macen McLean, who graduated. Instead of being at the top of the class this year, Powers was still second as Riverside Christian came down to 1B. Tranch jumped 6-7 on March 28 and hasn’t been past 6-4 since. Powers has made steady progress and now is a threat to unseat the state’s leading 1B jumper.

Only the top two places advance to State unless the State standard is broken in this meet. Based on their personal record times, here are some of the intriguing match-ups; the State standard follows event:
