Fishing still strong in Washington

LONG TRIP FOR A FISH: It was free fishing weekend and a group was reeling them in on a very glassy, calm Roland Lake, Saturday morning. This group wasn't looking for trout. Warren Phoeurn, from Cambodia, removes the weeds from a bluegill.

Last weekend was "free fishing weekend" in Washington and Oregon. More than half a million people purchase fishing licenses each year in Washington and the numbers look fairly constant over the past few years.

As of May 2015, 550,562 people purchased licenses to fish in Washington. By the end of the fiscal year it will likely top out at more than 700,000. According to information from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, fishing licenses of all kinds have generated $25,810,411. That's up more than $8 million over 2009.
