Budget impasse leads to $2 billion hole

 


The Washington State budget is signed and sealed but not entirely delivered.

In what is being called a full-scale meltdown, on July 1 in the very wee hours of the morning, a $2 billion hole was created in the budget as legislators tried to wrangle something workable related to I-1351, the voter-approved classroom size reduction initiative. The initiative has laudable goals and is incredibly expensive. A vote was sought to delay implementation of the initiative to allow for more time to fund it. At around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, consensus was lost, and the suspension of I-1351 was not passed, leaving $2 billion to be accommodated for its implementation.
