Powder in letter clears Wasco courthouse

Bad mail: The Wasco County Courthouse received a letter similar to this one.

Police and fire department vehicles surrounded the Wasco County Courthouse Monday afternoon and the courthouse was evacuated for an hour, following warnings from other counties that letters containing a powdery substance had been addressed to county sheriffs.

"In Grant County, the sheriff actually opened the envelope, immediately developed a rash and was transported to the hospital," said Wasco County Commissioner Rod Runyon. He said Wasco County Chief Deputy Lane Magill found an envelope matching the description and ordered the evacuation as a safety precaution.

"We had two ladies in the front of the sheriff's office, and they were quarantined for a time, but had no ill effects," he adde...
