War veterans take to the skies, greeted by Scouts

‘OFF we go into the wild blue yonder’ seemed the theme of the day for the WWII and Korean War Veterans from the Veterans Home in The Dalles. These ‘young men’ were treated to a free flight Aug. 4, at the Dallesport Airfield. ‘Ageless Aviation’ flew them on a scenic route around the Gorge and returned them to a long overdue ‘Welcome Home’ surprise from Troop and Pack 395 from The Dalles. Joining the Scouts and Vets were staff members and the Dallesport Fire Department Volunteers. One of the vets had to admit it was a new experience for him because he did his stint in the service in a submarine, while another was Lyle’s own Delmar Kindrick. He, and his son Mark, joined the scouts for a photo during the celebration. Memories were shared and the camaraderie of these men could be seen in the exchange of their nods to one another. There was no discrimination between which branch they served or which battle they fought, for they knew that it was a joint American effort. The countless freedoms that we enjoy today are because of the sacrifices of our brave military; those before them, and those still serving today.

We have scheduled three art groups to start with and will decide on a more permanent day and time in September. It started Monday and ran from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The upcoming dates are Monday, Aug.17, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For the first meet-up we explored watercolors under the guidance of a local artist. After that we will try out other artistic projects like creating sketchbooks, mixed-media collage, Gelli printing, painting wood signs, and continue with any projects or techniques group members want to try out. We really want to encourage adults who don’t think they have any artistic talent to join us! It’s a safe, fun place to create masterpieces and disasters and just enjoy being creative.
