Gunkel takes national contest

He flirted with the title in 2013, was in the top five last year, but perseverance paid off for David Gunkel who won the light rifle competition at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Gunkel, a 2015 graduate of Goldendale was top scoring competitor in kneeling (111 of 120 points) and standing (106/120) positions and had the fourth highest score (114 of 120) in the prone position to give him the winning overall score. Gunkel was making his fourth trip to the National finals. He was the Washington state champion this year.

Gunkel will attend Washington State University this fall. He intends to major in fruit and vegetable management and return to work on his family's farm at Maryhill. He is the son of Dana and Ron Gunkel. The National title in his final year of eligibility completes Gunkel's goal for shooting sports.
