Cougar Creek Fire in mop up stages

CIRCLE OF GREEN: Only the trees closest to the water at Bird Lake survived the encircling flames of the Cougar Creek Fire.

The Cougar Creek Fire, listed by its Incident Command information site as just six miles from Glenwood, Tuesday was reported as 97 percent contained.

Tuesday firefighters were continuing mopping up and improving the strength of existing containment lines. Crews are also focused on completing a small portion of containment line on the north end of the fire in an area of heavy fuels and large timber. No forward fire spread is expected, although fire is expected to burn in the pockets of the interior islands.

Warmer weather is aiding firefighters in locating and extinguishing hot spots within the containment lines, reducing any threat to the line.
