Viewing opportunity: The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center will offer visitors an opportunity to view the upcoming lunar eclipse on Sunday, Sept. 27

Columbia Gorge Discovery Center hosts a Harvest Moon Lunar Eclipse viewing Sunday, Sept. 27, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by an optional interpretive trail walk at 7 p.m. This event is free to the public.

Bob Yoesle from Friends of the Goldendale Observatory will have telescopes on hand near the museum's front entrance to view the rising moon and lunar eclipse beginning at 6 p.m. The moon will rise already partially eclipsed at 6:49 p.m. which should make for a spectacular scene as the darkened moon appears over the horizon. Full totality of the eclipse begins at 7:11 p.m. and lasts until 8:23 p.m. During that time the full moon will be quite dark and all the stars will be as easy to see as on a moonless night. Bring your binoculars and spotting scopes. If you would like to photograph the eclipse, be sure to bring your telephoto lens and a tripod.

Steve Stout will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. on the unique properties of this year's Harvest Moon. This lunar eclipse will be particularly rare, because it is a supermoon. Once the eclipse has passed, this year's Harvest Moon will be one of the brightest for the Americas. Full moon takes place at 9:27 p.m.

Steve Thompson will offer an optional interpretive Harvest Moon walk along the Riverfront trail beginning at 7 p.m. for a one hour hike. As the sun sets, take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about native plants, Lewis and Clark, or the many Oregon Trail historic sites along the way. The path is paved and handicap-accessible. The trail is paved and wheelchair accessible.

Telescope viewing depends on weather permitting. If the sky clouds over, we'll move indoors to the Murdock Theater for a PowerPoint presentation.

Bring your friends and family for this free event, but please leave pets at home. Visit for more information.

The Discovery Center is the official interpretive center for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, located off I-84 at exit 82, 5000 Discovery Drive, The Dalles, Oregon 97058. The museum is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, phone (541) 296-8600 x 201 or visit
