Childhood obesity can be beat with community support


September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Childhood obesity is an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke. In addition, children who have obesity face more bullying and stigma. The good news, however, is that childhood obesity can be prevented, with the help of everyone in our community.

Childhood obesity rates have been on the rise for years in the US, having more than doubled since 1980. Currently, one in three American children is overweight or obese. Last year in Klickitat County, 30 percent of eighth graders self-reported being overweight or obese, compared to 23 percent statewide. Among younge...
