Racing coffins on the way

Celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt was said to have slept in one. Edgar Allan Poe feared resting in one prematurely. Soon, Goldendale will host an event in which wheeled coffins compete for the fastest time.

Dubbed the Henry Timmerman Fireball Express Coffin Race, the concept of such a unique competition seemed a natural fit for Goldendale's traditional Trunk or Treat festivities, held on the Saturday one week before Halloween. According to Jack Methe, who along with his wife Kim, manage The General Store and host Trunk or Treat, talk was had in 2014 to expand the celebration into daytime events. An internet search sparked his interest.
