Leon Kinner


Leon Kinner was born May 4, 1935 in Seattle, Washington, the son of Kent and Katherine Kinner. He was a resident of The Dalles since 1964.

Mr. Kinner was the former owner and operator of Smith Calloway Chapel for over 35 years. Leon was a Master Mason and Shriner belonging to all York Rite Bodies. He was the founder, past president and charter member of Mid-Columbia Hospice, founder and past president of Visiting Health Services, and founder and past president of Mid-Columbia Car Club. Mr. Kinner was also a senior search and rescue pilot Civil Air Patrol, Master Sergeant with the United States Army Reserve and member of the International Association of Death Educators. He served on the airport commission for over 25 years, was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and former longtime member of The Dalles Country Club.

Leon was affiliated with Chi Psi fraternity at University of Washington class of 1957 and San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He was married to his wife, Myrna Smith, for 53 years. His hobbies included flying airplanes, restoring antique autos and oil painting.

Mr. Kinner passed away at his home in Wasco, Oregon on August 19, 2015 at the age of 80.

A memorial service will be held at later date.

Survivors include children Anna Kinner and Todd Kinner; sister Ardyth Ferraro and her husband Ernie; niece Susan Radford; and nephew Stephen Green.
