Wolves make familiar trip to Royal for playoff game

Goldendale was unable to slow down the La Salle Lightning and will settle for third seed in the District tournament for football. The Lightning won Friday’s game 42-12. The loss means that Goldendale will travel to Royal City to take on the number one ranked Royal Knights, Friday at 7 p.m.

Both teams ran the ball with Goldendale picking up 198 yards on 33 carries. Logan Boardman rushed for 130 yards on 10 carries for the Wolves. La Salle ran the ball 45 times for 257 yards. They were led by Nick Perry’s 179 yards on 14 carries. Neither team put the ball in the air much in the game, but La Salle’s Bridger Parrish threw for 213 yards on just 17 attempts, an outstanding rate of 12.5 yards for attempt. La Salle earned a home game against Connell for the first round of playoffs.

For Goldendale, the trip to Royal will be familiar. First of all, Coach Chris Hill played football for Royal. And, although some may have forgotten, this isn’t Goldendale’s first trip for a playoff game at Royal. This is the sixth playoff trip to Royal since 2007. All but one of those years, Goldendale was fourth seed and Royal was first. One year Goldendale thought they would miss Royal after finishing third in the West, but Connell took the East that year and Goldendale still traveled to Royal.

Royal has been a tough place for Goldendale to play, but they have come close to upsetting the perennial top 10 team. It wasn’t close in 2007 and Royal went on to win the State title. They were first again in 2008 when Goldendale played them and lost. In 2009, however, Goldendale out-gained the Knights and lost the game on a fourth and inches play that broke loose for a long touchdown by Royal.

Goldendale hosted the first round game in 2010 and got past River View to the next round. They lost that year to Chelan 24-17. The next year was the closest Goldendale has come to knocking off Royal, a 14-7 loss. They lost badly to the Knights in their last meeting in the 2012 playoffs. Goldendale missed out on the playoffs the past two years, but will return to Royal on Friday.
