Gas odors trigger calls to utility


A rash of calls to Avista about gas leaks has prompted concern about the utility’s new gas lines. Fifteen calls have been received about odors in and around homes.

An Avista spokesman told The Sentinel Tuesday it hired a subcontractor, Niels Fugel, to do installation of new pipes to replace and update high-pressure lines dating to the 1950s. They are 98 percent complete at this point, with mostly clean-up remaining for the job.

An odorant is put in gas lines to ensure detection of leaks. With the new line, eight times the normal odorant was put in, facilitating quicker detection of even minute leaks. These stronger odors emanating from the new line led many to fear they had a major lea...
