Area experts warn of ongoing IRS scam 'epidemic'


It's terror through the phone lines-and it purports to be coming from your own government.

The IRS scam, in which burly-sounding phony IRS agents make menacing threats of jail time if the victim doesn't immediately send fictitious back taxes-is being called an epidemic by scam experts. It occurs a lot because it seems to work. It's now listed as the number one phone scam occurring in the country today, making almost half a million calls in 2015 and claiming more than $16 million in stolen money.

Some accountants in Goldendale report their clients receive such calls several times a week. Despite ample media exposure of the scam, many in the area still fall victim.
