Marge McKune

Marge McKune

Margaret Emma "Marge" McKune passed away January 20, 2016 in Richland, Washington. Marge was born November 18, 1918 in Goldendale, Washington (one of identical twins) to Ari and Minnie Short. Their homestead was at Cliffs, Washington on the Columbia River (where the Harvey Aluminum Plant was built).

She worked on many of the farms in the Centerville area for room and board so she could finish high school. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1937.

She married Eldon D. McKune of Goldendale on her 21st birthday, November 18, 1939. El and Marge operated the Home Motel Grocery Store and Gas Station for years. Then she went to work for J.C. Penney, Store #28, as a retail clerk, retiring after 28 years. She held many other jobs around town, working at Niemis' Variety Store and the Evergreen Café as a waitress, especially during hunting season.

Marge was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was always ready to volunteer. She loved Bingo and the Friday night potlucks, and we all remember her and her word search books. She was also an avid bowler. Marge may have been small, but she was fierce. She didn't learn to drive until she was 65 years old.

She is survived by her daughter Sandi Shaw; granddaughter Jodi (Kevin) Santillie; grandson Dave (Rosie) Anthis; great granddaughters KC Rosencrans, Courtney and Michaela Santillie, Abbey and Hailey Anthis (twins) and Sara (Beau) Nicholson; her "one and only" great grandson Mack Anthis, USMC, Japan; and two great-great granddaughters Brooklyn and Dakotah Nicholson. She was "G.G." to all the great grandkids. She is also survived by her identical twin sister, Marcella E. Spalding; nephews Bill (Kelli) Spalding and Mike (Kathy) Spalding; and she was "Auntie Marge" to numerous nieces and nephews, too many to list.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Eldon McKune; her father Ari Armstrong Short; her mother Minnie (Wilson) Short Beeks; her stepdad Jake Beeks; two infant sisters Jean Ann and Jane Ella; one young brother Albert Clarence; her oldest sister, Helen Scholl; and her youngest brother, Robert Short.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel in Goldendale with a graveside service at Mountain View IOOF Cemetery following. Please join us for lunch at the American Legion after the service. Come prepared to share stories about "Mom." I'm sure there are some good ones out there.
