Spring sky will feature five planets


Welcome to March. The year's third month brings warmer temperatures, the vernal equinox, and the closest approach to Earth for the solar system's largest planet, Jupiter. It should be a good month for stargazing when the clouds part.

Spring officially arrives on March 20. If you were standing on the equator on that day, the Sun would be directly overhead. If you were at the North Pole or the South Pole, the Sun would be on the horizon. Our days and nights will be about equal in length.

For early risers on March 1, clear skies will treat you to a nice view of the third quarter Moon, flanked by Mars on its right, and Saturn on its left. Also visible will be Jupiter, in the western sky. Venu...
