GigaFlood, story of Lake Missoula flood coming to Discovery Center


GigaFlood, the story of the epic floods that carved out the Washington scablands and the Columbia River Gorge, will be presented at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, March 25, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Author Rick Thompson will make the presentation following the path of the largest of the Lake Missoula floods. It is estimated that 540 cubic miles of water, 40 cubic miles of ice, 50 cubic miles of rock, sediment and debris tore down the Columbia River Gorge at speeds up to 65 mph. Thompson will trace the influx and exit channels in the areas north and south of the Columbia River as it overflowed the Portland/Vancouver area up the 400 foot level.
