Erickson, more than a plumber's friend

PICTURE SAYS IT ALL: The morning basketball group took a moment to say thank you to Gary Erickson for all the work he does to support area athletics. Erickson adds fun to events, which is easy to see on the faces of his friends.

Gary Erickson was honored for his commitment to Goldendale sports, last week when a few of his friends took time out from their morning basketball to present Erickson with a meaningful trophy. Erickson, who is a plumber and general contractor, among many other things, was presented a plunger with a plaque declaring him to be the "Most Versatile Scorekeeper of the Decade."

Erickson is a player and scorekeeper for the morning basketball program. He opens the Goldendale Gym at 5 a.m., three days a week, then organizes the games and even steps in to play when needed. Erickson has been doing it for more than 20 years.

That doesn't begin to describe Erickson's activity on behalf of Goldendale and area sports. His dedication to youth is appreciated, as shown by the fist bumps Goldendale basketball players go out of their way to give Erickson at the scorekeeper table during basketball games. Erickson works the table and adds a great deal to the game with his announcing of scoring and substitutions. He does the same for wrestling and for the 1B District basketball tournament. Erickson is also the guy who often runs the dust mop across the court during breaks.

He is a friend to everyone and some of them decided it was time to honor him as such.
