Wishram School is in the ICU

Education approach seeks to deal with apathy in schools

Roberts' ICU program refuses to allow students to fall behind. It is directed at conquering the problem of apathy among students, says Roberts.

Wishram School is a unique place, nestled securely against the basalt cliffs along the Columbia River, almost hidden and probably unknown by many who pass above it along Highway 14. There are changes afoot at the school, which has become an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ever since the hiring of a new superintendent, last spring. There is no need to send flowers, however; everything is just fine.

The ICU in this case is an approach the school board bought into when they interviewed Mike Roberts for the superintendent position. ICU is Robert's approach to dealing with what he says is the most common problem that plagues schools, apathy.
