Let's create heritage sites


To the Editor:

There are many valid reasons to criticize the United Nations. Nevertheless, there is one function of the U.N. that surely we all must regard with heartfelt gratitude: the role of the U.N. in designating World Heritage Sites, with the purpose of protecting these elements of the landscape from thoughtless, wanton destruction. Unfortunately, many world heritage sites have been demolished during the past 15 years, a sad and permanent loss to the human race.

It occurs to me that it would be a fine thing if small communities such as Goldendale would follow the example of the U.N. and designate heritage sites to be cherished and preserved. I hereby nominate to be preserved as Gold...
